1) How does the documentary "Horrors in the East" explain the transition of the Japanese military from being relatively humane in Taiwan and WWI to committing horrific atrocities in the 1930s and WWII?
The documentary explains Japan's shift from being humane in Taiwan and WW1 into being inhumane in WW2 and treating the Chinese in an extremely cruel way. For example, the documentary tells us about the rape of Nanking, in which over 200, 000 Chinese people were raped and killed. Compared to Taiwan, the Japanese were extremely cruel since they only punished people who spoke out against them but in china, they killed and raped anyone they wanted.
2) In light of the historical record of Japan's actions in East Asia in 1931-45, how likely is it that the claims made by Japanese historians about "comfort women" are true? Why or why not?
The claims made by the Japanese historians are most likely untrue but can still be debated. For example, the historians argued that the number of "comfort women" were actually 20,000 instead of 200,000, despite much evidence saying otherwise.
3) How appropriate do you judge the actions of the "revisionist" Japanese professors (and the Japanese government which allegedly supports them) to be? Why?
I feel that the actions made by the Japanese revisionist are extremely inappropriate. Instead of simply changing the number of the "comfort women" or even worse, denying the fact that the event even happened, the Japanese government should apologise and offer compensation for the terrible incident. The reason being that it is just really inhumane to simply deny the fact that a massacre and mass rape happened or to simply twisting the truth by making saying that the number is lower that the historical records say.
4) Read the document on Google Drive (under "Assignments") entitled "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Document." Summarize its content and answer the two questions at the end of the document.
After the Meiji Restoration, Japan saw itself as an Imperial power and soon Imperialized Taiwan, China and Korea. Soon, Japan controlled Taiwan, Korea and parts of China. In 1903, Japan won against Russian in the Russo-Japanese war, which was the first time a non-European power won against a European power, and it embarrassed the Russians deeply. In WW2, the Twenty-one demands were given to China by Japan. After that, the Invasion of Manchuria began. The Japanese had a goal: the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, in which Japan would grow stronger n East Asia.
The Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere were written rules that directed the Japanese Empire to gain their power over the islands to gain natural resources. Imperial Europe and Imperial Japan's goal were somewhat similar, which was natural resources.
